Pipas Frias

What if I told you there was a tasty, refreshing drink that had no cholesterol, was low in fat, packed with fiber, nutrients, electrolytes, and some of the benefits include:

weight loss aid, hydration boost, blood pressure reduction, digestion and metabolism facilitation, diabetes control, anti-aging, anti-carcinogenic, stress reduction, acne elimination, and blood circulation improvement?

What is this wonder drink you ask? Coconut water! Here in Costa Rica, 'agua de pipa' as it's known, is available everywhere in its pure and unadulterated form; still inside the coconut. I always have one after a workout swim, when I'm by a park, feeling thirsty, any reason really. As if the health benefits alone weren't convincing enough to buy it, the best part about coconut water is the price. It is so cheap! My husband and I feigned outrage the other day when our local vendor increased the price from 250 to 300 Colones (.47 to .56 cents). They are portable so you can take it anywhere and a 'pro tip' I found was that if the vendor hacks a hole at the top of the coconut just big enough, I can use a small spoon to scrap up the soft coconut 'meat' inside when I'm done drinking it.

Coconut oil has so many great benefits for the hair and skin so it's only natural that 'agua de pipa' would too. An added bonus is that it helps in milk production in lactating moms and since I'm exclusively breastfeeding my son for his first 6 months, both he and I are benefitting.

Do you drink coconut water? Do you know where I can get it for cheap in New York or Switzerland? Leave your comments below :-)

Mmmm, I get boxes of coconut water at Costco. I would love to get it fresh!

I love coconut water as well as coconut oil for multiple purposes. I enjoyed viewing pictures and updates of your journey in Costa Rica. I’ve only bought a coconut off a street vendor in Washington Heights. I wish they were more readily available for us to enjoy, here in NY.

It was so good! If only I could find authentic coconuts like this in New York
