Chemicals We Avoid

The Hairoine products only have all-natural active ingredients and they do not contain any chemicals that may be harmful for your body.

So what are these harmful chemicals for which you should watch out? Here are the five worst:

Sodium lauryl sulphate

(found in: shampoos)

Would you wash your hair with laundry detergent or dish washing liquid? Well, if your shampoo contains sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate that is essentially what you are doing. Yes, sodium lauryl sulphate gets the hair and scalp clean, but at the same time it strips the hair of its natural ‘good’ oils and can often irritate the skin. This is why a shampoo must be followed by a conditioner, to help restore the moisture. So why is this chemical found in almost 90% of shampoos? Because it is a cheap foaming agent and we’ve been trained to believe that foam equals clean.

Diazolidinyl/ Imidazolidinyl Urea

(found in: shampoos, conditioners, styling products, and hair sprays)

This stuff is used as a preservative. It can potentially release formaldehyde which can be toxic. A good and healthy alternative is Vitamine E, which you will find in many of my products.

Propylene/Polyethylene Glycol (PPG/PEG)

(found in: shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers)

This stuff is a humectant to give the product a firmer consistency. It keeps the product from melting in high heat or freezing when it is cold. It is also a lot cheaper than the bees wax and natural glycerine that I use for The Hairoine’s products.

These chemicals are known eye irritants and possible carcinogens. Some are safe but some are not. The problem is, you never know which one is used!

Mineral Oil (often described as petroleum, or the fancier ‘Paraffinum Liquidum’)

(found in: many hair care products, especially moisturizers)

Do you remember when this oil tanker spilled into the ocean and you saw birds with feathers glued together by thick black mineral oil? Chances are you putting some form of the same mineral oil on your own hair! Mineral oil is used as a moisturizer, but it actually coats the hair shaft and clogs pores, thereby preventing toxins from being released. Also, mineral oil can prevent other ingredients from penetrating into the hair shaft, so you don’t get the full benefit of the product. Manufactures love mineral oil because it is dirt cheap compared to the castor, almond and olive oils that The Hairoine products are based on.

Parabens (methyl, propyl, butyl)

(found in: moisturizers, shampoos, conditioners, gels and other styling products.)

Parabens are preservatives that prevent the growth of mold and mildew. There is an ongoing debate as to harmful effects of these parabens and whether or not they are carcinogens because they act like estrogen. The fact remains that they accumulate in the bloodstream. Why is it used in products? So they can be kept on the shelf for years! With natural products, you have the peace of mind that every ingredient is doing its job to help your hair and skin and not hurt you. Make it a habit of always looking at the ingredients before you buy a product. Just because it says ‘Natural’ or ‘Organic’ does not necessarily mean that the product is chemical free. Once you start using natural products, you also start noticing a difference in the healthier quality of your hair and skin.
